Vietnam still belongs to the category of 'low income countries, but it goes up fast in 2010 and hopes to reach the status of middle-income country soon. Due to the high economic growth and poverty alleviation programs the percentage of the population that lives below the poverty line fell from 28% in 2004 to 20% in 2005. The growth in recent years has brought greater prosperity to parts of the population, particularly in and around cities and easily accessible parts of the country side. Approximately three quarters of the population of more than 80 million live in rural areas, particularly in the major rice-growing regions. The majority (58 percent) of the population works in agriculture (including fisheries and forestry). Vietnam has become the second rice producer in the world.
