When Montenegro declared independence on 3 June 2006 the union of Serbia and Montenegro ceased to exist. Serbia has a population of approximately 7,5 million and an area of 77.449 square kilometers (circa 1,9 times the Netherlands). The population consists largely of ethnic Serbs (82,9%). Serbian is the official language. The Latin and the Cyrillic alphabet have equal status and can be used alongside one another.
