Senegal

Country information

The Republic of Senegal lies in West Africa and borders the sea to the West. Northern Senegal lies in the Sahel.  Senegal is one of the most democratic countries in Africa. Civic participation is high, there are a number of political parties and the political situation is stable.  Senegal has had reasonably constant economic growth in the past five years. Dakar’s harbor achieved good fishing and trade results in 2003.  Nonetheless the country is poor and there is high unemployment.  Although many Senegalese have an improved income, many of its ten million inhabitants do not have access to basic services such as schooling, drinking water, and food.
