Rwanda

Country information 

The Republic of Rwanda is located in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, and borders on Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tanzania and Uganda.  Most of Rwanda is hilly or mountainous. From January 1, 2006 Rwanda has been  divided into five (previously twelve) provinces: North, East, West, South and Kigali. These in turn are divided into 30 districts, 416 sectors and 2.147 cells (a limited number of households). The main aim of this new division was to increase the efficiency of the local government and increase the people’s influence over local matters.  Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa (375 people per square kilometer). The country has a total area of 26.338 km² and has approximately 9,9 million inhabitants, of whom almost one million live in and around the capital Kigali. It is estimated that 84% of the population are Hutu, 15% Tutsi and 1% Batwa or Twa (Pygmies).  The majority of the population (90%) is dependent on agriculture. The official languages of Rwanda are Kinyarwanda (a Bantu language related to Kirundi, the language of Burundi), French and English (introduced by Tutsi, returning from English speaking Uganda after 1994). 

Partner organization 

Evangelical Friend’s Church of Rwanda

On arrival in Rwanda MBT provides reintegration support through its partner organization. Upon arrival the client receives a financial contribution. This sum is not given in cash but is spent under supervision of the partner organization on providing the means necessary for building a sustainable future in Rwanda.

In Rwanda MBT works together with the Evangelical Friend’s Church of Rwanda which offers returnees the following individually tailored support: relevant and up to date country information; picking people up at the airport; temporary accommodation in a centre belonging to the church; limited social training; support in accessing medical or legal help; support in finding employment and credit (mainly orientation and referral).
