Nepal

Country information

Nepal lies in the Southern foothills of the Himalaya.  It borders on the Chinese province of Tibet to the North and India. Nepal consists of three geographic regions: the Himalaya to the North, the hilly region on the middle and the Terai steppe to the South. Nepal has approximately 29,5 million inhabitants, the majority of whom live in rural areas.  Almost 13% of the population lives in big cities.  The capital city is Katmandu (approximately 911.000 inhabitants). Since 15 January 2007 Nepal has been a secular state.

Previously, according to the constitution of 1990, Nepal was a ‘Hindu Kingdom’. Nepalese society is a complex mix of groups from the Hindu Caste system and indigenous ethnic groups. Population groups that belong to the two highest Castes, the Brahmin and Chetris, generally occupy the most important positions in the government, trade, security services and education. Hinduism also has two ‘untouchable’ Castes, the Harijans and Dalits. Dalits are excluded from the Caste system and are, mainly in rural areas, discriminated against.
