Country information
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is, after Sudan and Algeria, the largest country in Africa. The country has a total area of 2.344.858 square kilometers, approximately the same size as Western Europe. The DRC borders on Angola, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), the Central African Republic, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Zambia. The population of DRC is estimated to be 68,7 million, of whom almost half are children under the age of 15. Only 2,5% of the population is older than 65. The DRC is home to approximately 250 ethnic groups, the majority of whom (about 80% of the population) are classified as Bantu. The three largest ethnic groups are counted as Bantu peoples: the Baluba (18%), the Mongo (17%) and the Bakongo (12%). The official language of the DRC, French, is spoken by the majority of people living in urban areas. Education is conducted in French. The most commonly spoken language however is Lingala.
Partner organization
Caritas Kinshasa
On arrival in the DRC MBT provides reintegration support through its partner organization. Upon arrival the client receives a financial contribution of up to € 1750,-. This sum is not given in cash but is spent under supervision of the partner organization on providing the means necessary for building a sustainable future in the DRC.
In the DRC MBT works together with Caritas Congo and the Congregation des Soeurs Catholiques. In addition to up to date country information these organizations offer returnees individualized economic and social support. This includes initial reception, support in finding employment or establishing their own business and assistance in accessing education. In addition returnees can be referred to a specialized healthcare organization.
