Benin
Country information
The Republic of Benin lies in West Africa. It has a population of 5.632.000 (50 per square kilometer) and gained independence in 1960. The current president Boni Yayi won the 2006 election democratically. Trade is Benin’s most important economic sector. Another important economic mainstay is agriculture, in particular cotton production (80% of exports). The population consists of diverse ethnic groups, of whom the Fon (39%) and the Yoruba (12%) are the largest. French is the official language. 19% of the population are Roman Catholic, a further 15% are Muslim.
Partner organization
On arrival in Benin MBT provides reintegration support through its partner organization. Upon arrival the client receives a financial contribution. This sum is not given in cash but is spent under supervision of the partner organization on providing the means necessary for building a sustainable future in Benin.
MBT works together with Caritas Benin. Caritas Benin offers returnees individualized economic and social support. This includes initial reception, support in finding employment or education or establishing their own business. In addition returnees can be referred to an organization specializing in healthcare. Caritas doesn’t have any specific expertise in developing business plans, but can direct returnees to other organizations which do.
