Algeria

Country information

The Democratic Peoples Republic of Algeria is located on the North Africa Mediterranean coast, bordering Morocco to the West and the disputed Western Sahara, to the East Libya and Tunisia and to the South Mauritania, Mali and Niger. With an area of 2.381.741 square kilometers (approximately 70 times that of the Netherlands) Algeria is the second largest country in Africa (after Sudan). A narrow coastal strip of land is separated from the Sahara by the Atlas mountains. The Sahara covers approximately eighty percent of the country and has considerable oil and gas reserves. The majority of the population of 32,1 million lives in cities in the Northern coastal area. The capital, Algiers, including the suburbs, has a population of nearly 4,5 million.
