Country Information
The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is located in South Asia and is completely landlocked. Afghanistan borders on Pakistan to the East and South and Iran to the West (936km). Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan lie to the North and China to the North East. Afghanistan covers approximately 650.000 km², eighteen times the surface of the Netherlands. The country is divided into 34 provinces. The five largest cities are Kabul (the capital), Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Jalalabad. The population is estimated at 31 million and consists of a great number of different ethnic groups. Pashtuns are the most numerous (42%), other important groups are the Tajiks (27%), Hazara (about 9%), the Uzbeks (about 9%), the Aimak (4%) and the Turkmen (3%).
